Now that's early money...

Mitt Romney organized a “National Call Day” in Boston with nearly 500 of his closest corporate friends, governors, Brahmins and professional fundraisers. These 500 pals phoned through their rolodexes using custom-built software to raise money for the Republican former Governor of Massachusetts. The callers brought in $6.5m in one day. Romney’s campaign staff hopes to raise $100m before the presidential primaries begin.

As a New York Times article on Romney's fundraising blitz notes:

And as Mr. Romney announced at day’s end that he had drawn a $6.5 million one-day haul in cash and commitments, it was also a striking example of just how important fund-raising has become as a test for presidential viability, this year more than most, with the race dominated by high-profile candidates, most of whom are unlikely to participate in the public financing system.

It sounds like the Race for Fat Cat Money is well underway. Let's put presidential canidates on notice that we want the American people not the Fat Cats to decide who runs in the 2024 presidential race. Sign the Clean Money Pledge today!

They speak so highly of their abilities to raise money like that's what we need! While congress spends the first dayz declaring all luggage will be inspected on flights! When in reality money does not play any longer in the hearts and minds of the working man and we all now know that luggage needs to be flown on another cargo plane and not placed under our seats! I have said this before, the only way to fight the fire is to create liability for these donors.

Make a list, check it twice then begin the boycotts and ridicule of campaign donors.

Line up a few of the worst and start filing lawsuits against them. Make it too troublesome to donate to fat cats.

OK, so Mitt Romney raised $6.5 million, but the maximum donation was $2,100. Would someone care to explain why Mitt Romney accepting $2,100 donations is worse than Unity08 asking for a maximum of $5,000 on the U08 Donate page?

Addendum: The Clean Money Pledge linked above states "And now's the time to demand that anyone who wants to run for president finance their campaign with the majority of money coming from small contributions under $250."

So they're asking people to sign a petition demanding a $250 limit, then asking for up to 5 grand. Now that takes a lot of chutzpah. Or a lot of same-old same-old politics.

If you're going to make fun of Mitt Romney for calling in his friends to jump start HIS campaign, then if you don't want to be hypocritical you need to address the matter as it pertains to Unity08.

What percentage of Unity08's contributions above $200 to date come from the "pals," to use your term, of the leadership of Unity08: that is, network contacts of the Founders, the executives of the Unity08 corporation, the employees of the Unity08 corporation, and the Rules Committee?

Yes, that is a literal question. And yes, I expect an answer, or I expect a public apology to Mitt Romney.

Demanding a public apology seems a bit over the top. I don't think they're "making fun" of Romney for using his network to raise funds rather they are pointing out the role that early fundraising plays in determining "presidential viability". I'm sure many of the Unity08 donors are also pals of the founders or the founders themselves, but that's the case with any start-up organization. Heck, I'd want them to believe enough in what they're doing to put their own money into it if they're going to ask me for mine.

"Making fun" is a nice way of putting it. "Ridiculing" is perhaps more accurate. You don't speak of "pals," "fat cats," "corporate friends," "Brahmins," and "rolodexes" when you're trying to portray someone in positive terms.

It's rather straightforward: if Unity08 believes that the role of "pals," "fat cats," "corporate friends," "Brahmins," and "rolodexes" is a negative development, then surely Unity08 should not expect us to tolerate the same role in the growth of its own organization. Unity08 itself has made it a relevant matter to determine the role of the above.

If Unity08 considers itself above such "bookkeeping" questions that it uses to criticize other political efforts, then I think we all know what adjective is appropriate.

Romney wouldn't have gotten re-elected in Massachusetts if he ran again.
