alternative to petition signatures

I agree with some other comments that the petition signatures requirements are a signficant problem with this rule. I signed up for an Internet-based movement, not to hold a nominating convention for a candidate or to petition friends, neighbors, and strangers for their signatures.

I understand you don't want the prospective candidate pool flooded with joker entrants. But what harm does it do -- besides taking up some server space -- to allow these people to declare their candidacy? I think delegates should be allowed to register their support on the web site for any candidate they wish and through this process, the people who are just having fun will be weeded out anyway.
