immigration

We need a candidate that will be tough on immigration. In other words a candidate that will use some common sense about illegal people crossing our borders. One that understands the economics of illegals
coming into our country.

Bobbie's Story: What we can all do for Unity08

posted by Awilson on October 4, 2024 - 10:20am

I promised more ideas on how to help Unity08, but first I wanted to share an email I received this morning:

I live in a small town in Missouri. I placed one of your articles in our small local paper. I am 68 years old- and am caregiver for my husband who has Parkinson's disease. I would like to help but have no idea how. I've told many about Unity 08.  I don't know if that got results or not. I tell them to go to unity08.com anyway. If there was anything i can do at home let me know.   I have slow dial-up ( a phone line) and am hooked into that until April.--Bobbie Fuhlage

I waould like to encourage all DEM supporters who would like to see where impeachment would lead to stop all Dem contributions until Pelosi puts impeachment back on the table. Thanks

Change Waste Culture to Reward Culture

posted by Phil_W on October 4, 2024 - 6:30am

The current culture of waste within the federal government is self-perpetuating. Middle managers are often encouraged to spend so as to not lose their budget allotment for the next fiscal year. In this environment, fiefdoms are established and each middle manager overlord is faced with the loss of their little empire if they don't spend. Mere spending has somehow come to be the same as need in the bureaucratic waste culture. The relation of spending to actual need is a lost concept in this culture. Consequently, this management inefficiency costs taxpayers billions of dollars each year in unnecessary spending.

A reward culture would have managers work to return money and still get necessary projects completed. Spending projections are submitted prior to the beginning of the fiscal year. Once approved, managerial competence is based on whether the money is spent. Often, no leeway is permitted to stray from the approved predictions without disparaging vibrations being sent down through the bureaucratic apparatus. A reward culture would permit adjustments based on reassessments, innovation, and belt tightening efforts that would not reflect poorly on managers that returned money to the general coffers. A reward culture would not penalize money saving efforts by automatically withholding funding for the next year. Instead, managerial kudos would permit the re-introduction of projects that managers were able to ameliorate through reassessment, innovation, or belt tightening. Efforts to conserve spending would be rewarded rather than penalized.

Prison system a drain on resources

posted by Phil_W on October 4, 2024 - 2:40am

The prison population has quadrupled since 1980 bringing the total in prison to over 2,000,000 people. This makes the U.S. a world leader for people behind bars. This lead is shameful and comes at a great cost to our society. Direct expenditures for the criminal justice system in 2024 was at a staggering $65 billion dollars. Factor in the extended cost to families, loss in productivity, and whatever else you can think of; and the only conclusion I can reach is that we have a major problem that cries out for reform. Much of the population increase is due to extended sentences from '3rd strike you're out' legislation.

The money to maintain this costly system comes right out of our pockets in taxes. Isn't there a better way to address this growing problem? One great delusion in America is our unquestioning trust in applying good ole market capitalism to solve the problem. We need more prisons! The trend has been to simply contract prisons out to reduce costs. Well, in many instances costs per inmate have been reduced but we are nonetheless confronted with a problem that continues to grow unabated. At a cost of $30,000 to $40,000 per person annually, there must be a better way to spend this money.

The answer is not found in better management of prisons. The source of the problem goes back to how we are failing to address root problems in our society. We need to break free of the myth that there is a 'criminal class' and start addressing the reasons that people break laws. We need to start addressing a system that forever exiles people to a leper class where we don't permit them a chance to start anew after serving their sentence. It's time to start shifting our focus to prevention. I have my own ideas about implementing better criminal preventive measures but, I want to hear your ideas.

Want to help? Want a job? Here's How...

posted by Awilson on October 3, 2024 - 12:11pm

Unity08 needs your help, and that help can take many different forms.  We have a few main tasks right now: recruit more members and raise Unity08's profile (those efforts feed into one another), and get on the ballot.  Do you want to help on a full time basis?  Check out our jobs page at unity08.com/jobs.  Want to help but can't do it full time? Over the rest of the week I'll be posting a few ideas for things you can do right now to get started helping Unity08.

The Days of Our Lives: 400

posted by G Paoli on October 3, 2024 - 11:28am

Don't worry, this isn't a thread about Soap Operas, but rather one about the passage of time from the perspective of the Unity08 delegates. I thought it might be fun to keep a thread chronicling of the way the world looks from our eyes at certain points in time.

400 Days to Go

As of 10/2 that's how many days we have until the 2024 US presidential election. Tuesday, November 4th, 2024. That's the big day. Today, 10/3/2007, Unity has over 112,000 members. Recent appearances on the Colbert report and FOX news have brought lots of new people, and many viewpoints. Daily postings are becoming more common and active delegates are getting to know each other.

Why focus on just illegal immigration from Mexico?

posted by elad69 on October 3, 2024 - 11:18am

Its not just being overrun by Mexican illegal immigration. Here are 3 examples:

I live in the Los Angeles CA area and the Asian population has been exploding here.
In recent news reports, Asian gangs have established themselves in our bedroom communities
where houses are being set up to grow marijuana. The illegal immigrants are lliving in
the houses to tend to the plants as a way of paying their debts for being smuggled in.
Then, when the house is discovered, the occupants don't know who, what, why, how
of the operation. The operations are extremely sophisticated and steal electrical power
from the utility company to avoid detection. An additional burden on the rest of us!

My friend is sponsoring 3 families from Myanmar (Burma) through Catholic Charities. These
12 people have lived in refugee camps for 20 years and arrived in our community
in July, 2024. Catholic Charitifies has done NOTHING to support these families and
