Three incidents have made me realize that we need to take our country back from insiders, before we worry about outside threats.
The first is a suggestion from immigrant Ernie Lujan to tear down the Statue of Liberty. His reasoning is that it doesn't reflect today's immigrants. He is correct in his reasoning. Those who went through Ellis Island put AMERICA first.

The second is Rabbi Bogomilsky. He demanded that a Menorrah be put up next to the Christmas trees, or he would sue. The trees were taken down. Another example of personal religion over national origins. Non-American.
The third is the desire by a Congressman-elect, a national politician, to take the oath of office on a Quran, rather than the Bible. First one since the birth of our country to choose a non-bible for the oath of office. Our country wasn't founded by Muslims, it was founded by Christians, who were joined by Jews, Muslims, gentiles, Indians, etc. "In God We Trust" didn't come from the Quran.
When the original immigrants came, mostly from Europe, they didn't go through Ellis Island to settle a new Germany, France, Italy, Poland, et al. They came to settle America and to start a new life as Americans. They pledged allegiance to the flag of the United States; they prayed to God in their public schools, they kissed the soil of America, they promised to obey the laws of America, they learned English as a first language. France recognized their desire to start a true democracy by presenting them with the Statue of Liberty.
Today, 13,000,000 immigrants are illegal. They are fomenting an Anti-American attitude in order to turn our nation into their own. They refuse to obey our laws, they burn our flag, they have taken the Pledge of Allegiance away, they no longer allow prayer in public schools, they don't want to be Americans; they want to be their own country in ours.
Following the birth of our country, immigrants formed small conclaves of themselves within our country, but accepted the fact that they were first and foremost, AMERICANS. Why are we allowing that to change?

ouch

BigBear,

You and I must live in a different country.

I had the privilege to play in a Mexican band for 18 months - over 1/2 the players were from Mexico - and our gigs were 95% Latinos. I have never met a harder working group of people that loved America more. They may have even loved it more than I do. They have roadblocks and discrimination put in their way every day, and they brush it aside with a smile.

I have met many individuals from other ethnic groups as well and have also found them to have a great perspective and passion about what America stands for.

I would urge you to find a way to go out and meet some people that were not born in the U.S. - at church, in community halls, the library, etc. I am sure if you meet some real people in this kind of setting that your attitude will change and your fears will be reduced.

Best wishes,
Erik

P.S. - At least we put the trees back up at Sea-Tac!!! ;-)

Erik,

You are evidently in the minority!

In this part of the country we have illegals that break into elderly people's homes and tie and gag them and steal their inheritance. I know first hand because that happened to a close friend of mine. She said the two young men wore masks, but they spoke spanish. Because of the trauma from the experience, she is no longer living!

Partiotic people care about their country and about their fellow countrymen.

The majority of ILLEGAL immigrants are not PATRIOTIC to the U.S.!
Smuggling drugs, murdering, raping, stealing, lying, child molesting are not acts of Patriots!

There are some illegals that are only here for work. They need to go home and come back the lawful way.

A better idea would be to stay home and try to improve their own country instead of cowardly running away!

http://www.acaiplus.com/retta

The majority of illegal immigrants smuggle drugs, murder, rape, steal, lie, and molest children? I would love to see some stats to back up that assertion.

The majority of no group (i.e. immigrants - legal and illegal - or natural citizens) participates in the aforementioned activities. If you believe otherwise, you are not living on Earth.

I was born in a small town of well-off, white Americans. Until I moved at the age of 19, I never had the opportunity to say much more than a "hello" to anyone outside of that group. I had many misconceptions about immigrants.

For the past six years I have lived in Jersey City, NJ - one of the most ethnically diverse cities in our country. I have met and worked with many immigrants - legal and illegal - and my opinions of these individuals have thus changed quite a bit. Of the people I have gotten to know, most (i.e., the majority) are hard-working, law-abiding, and decent people who have great respect for this country. In fact, of all the people I know, the immigrant group is harder working and has a higher level of respect for this country than that of the group of people I know who are natural citizens.

Yes, these are merely personal experiences. But what personal experiences have you had with illegal immigrants that led you so far from reality?

Every group of individuals has a small minority that participates in the activities you mentioned - even white Christian Americans. However, it is illogical, deceitful, and immoral to characterize an entire group based upon the actions of a few.

I suspect that if this were a few generations ago, you would be arguing a pro segregation line. Or a few generations prior to that, you might be arguing a pro-slavery line. Or, perhaps, I'm just as ignorant about you as you are of illegal immigrants.

!!

You warn against inside threats yet the rest of your message is plain and simple immigrant bashing. Interesting.

I suggest you read up on American history, and I mean really crack open a book. Don't get your history lessons from Bill O'Reilly. Take a look at the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, read up on the separation of church and state, and check out the history of "In God We Trust" before you start assailing Muslims and immigrants as the biggest threats to America.

If you ask me, the hard working immigrant has more of a right to be here than the fat, lazy welfare recipient who feels that because they were born here they're entitled to all the social programs the government provides whether they deserve it or not. Deport THEM, not the hard working men and women that are rebuilding America!

I was first torn between "Taking our country back" (because that's what needs to happen) and "The Moderate Majority." I voted for "The Moderate Majority" because it would both get people's attention and say who the organization is comprised of at the same time.

I like the tageline...taking the country back....because I look at it as to say not only as to illegal immigration but mostly as to referring to politician's who have made a carear out of running for office being that is the only goal in their life is being in office...not to accomplish anything while there...just to be there....as far as immigration my wife is an immigrant I spent a year and a half doing her papers and all without a lawyer so don't tell me it is imposable for an American Citizen or legal immigrant to petition for a relative to come here to the States...and be here legally

I voted for this but after doing so I started having doubts. What I think is common sense isn't necessarily what others consider common sense, else we wouldn't have the divisiveness we do now. The problem with tag lines is they try to be all things - perhaps there is a way to incorporate all of these thoughts throughout the "campaign" in a way that doesn't force those on the far ends of the spectrum to deride the approach and castigate the whole bunch for being lukewarm.

This best explains what we are and why we matter.

What about "Unity08. Skip the Parties."
or "Unity08. The Place to Go."

Here are a few ideas for taglines. Let me know how you like them. Feel free to use/alter/repeat these.

"The Party of the People"
"Putting the American People back in Power"
"Giving the Republic back to the Public"
"A Party of the People, For the People, By the People"
"The Public Reclaiming the Republic"
"Putting Non-Partisans in Power"
"Reclaiming Power for the People"
"Putting the Public Back Into Our Republic"
"It's Time the American People Chose their Leaders"
"Giving The American People a Real Choice"
"Restoring the Governed's Power Over the Government"
"Giving the American People a Voice"

Dont we want to tap into the fact that this movement exists because we believe the system is badly broken, is dominated by special interests on both sides, excludes real Americans from having virtually any say at all in who leads and prevents any real focus on the real issues facing our nation? Dont we want to tap into the fact that so many of us have felt that both parties do not speak for us anymore? Arent we looking for another way? There is a line in there somewhere that captures this spirit. Help us get there.

I picked this because it implies that the real opinions of the country lie within this party, the "Moderate Majority".

Love feeback on that....

Sorry Anya,it doesn't ring my bell.

A Sooner Independent

I am trying to come up with something that illuminates the central message we want to communicate, which is to let people know that there is a new and dynamic place that is neither Dem or Repub where you can find a new political home. Thoughts?

Anya: I still like "Taking our country back" To me that implies the two parties are not doing what the people want them to do, so we have to take it back. They have quit paying attention to us so in reality we have to take it back and start with a new approach.

A Sooner Independent

I forget who said it, but that was your recast of what the person said, Anya Harris. That says what Unity08 means more than anything else I can see in all these wonderful comments by people. It's EXACTLY the reason I abandoned both the Demorats and the Repubicans in favor of Unity08. I'm telling everyone I know, and in my website I'll put a blog on it. We are supposed to disagree; but we are supposed to craft from that disagreement, CONSENSUS. That's why it's so wonderful to have a Presidential ticket composed of one Repub, one Demo, doesn't matter who's the Prez. NOT a third-party system, but a BRIDGE between the two. Nuff said?

Don't like any of them - too blase'.

Here are some other suggestions:

"Party FOR The People"
"Power To The People!"
"The People Have Spoken"
"People Powered!"
"REAL Change"
"Real People, REAL Choice(s)"
"United Not Divided"

This is a variation on the "United Not divided" phrase.

Another tagline suggestion:

"For the people; for a change".

I like this one so much, I am not going to vote on any of the others. Taking the country back was going to be my choice but it can be construed as a negative depending upon interpretation.

For the people. For a change says it all....perfectly!

That's my choice!

I really like this one...can we add to finalists?

What about Party OF the People?
Skip the Parties
A New Political Home

The real issue presented here is taking back America. I don't perceive it as "taking it back from illegal immigrants", rather, taking it back from the politicians whose money and power driven policies have created all of these issues. Immigration needs to be controlled but fear and hate can not become part of the equation. The greatest siege America has seen has been having our voice taken away in Washington. The "slogan" sould represent the desire for political change, because positive change can eliminate many of these issues.

Bob W. Hargis

bob, I didn't intend to imply that illegal immigration is the problem of why we don't own our country. I will agree that there are some politicians who put themselves well before their nation. But politicians and illegal immigrants did not take Christ out of Christmas, prayer out of schools, Pledge of Allegiance out of our lives, etc. That was, plain and simple, people who wanted a different country.
All of the above have contributed to the loss, and those who believe in the morality of America as it was practiced going into the 40's have to take it back. And yes, it is a political effort.

The "Taking Our Country Back" slogan is wrong for Unity08 for a number of reasons.

1. It's far from unique. As others have noted, there are many groups that voice similar sentiment!s for one reason or another.

2. It's actually contrary to what Unity08 professes to be about. To say you're 'taking something back' from someone would imply that they don't have *any* of it anymore - and it seems to me that exclusion isn't the point, it's inclusivity and the restoration of balance in our political system.

That's why out of the available choices I like "Stronger Together" the best - it's the only one that addresses the theme that makes Unity08 unique and interesting.

smendler disagrees. He says that it implies that we have lost something. We have, we have lost America. Examples, Prayer in schools, English as a first language, Pledge of Allegiance to America (not your home of origin), America first, not after everyone else, Christmas trees, and on and on. We need to go back to the basics that founded this country and not the basics that immigrants bring from other countries. There was no problem in the early days of Ellis Island. Those, including my family, came here because they wanted the freedom and choice that America provided. Now, they come, fly their own flag, demand their rights under American government, work and send their money home (not America); demand their origins be recognized as American. They bring no allegiance to America, yet they want all of the advantages. I believe that we have lost America, and are struggling to find something else. Those of us who want America back are going to have to fight for it.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."
Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Every American citizen needs to read this!

this was in an email i recieved today, i hope that it is accurate in attributing this to president roosevelt but if not, it is valid in it's sentiments and it's ideas.

Gets my vote, although on principal I couldn't agree with Bob and 'smendler' more -- even though at first blush you seem at odds with one another. It seems this thread got a little off topic for a bit, but we all have our hot-button issues. The key is that we, as a MODERATE MAJORITY, can coalesce a diversity of generally centrist opinions and create an inclusive ticket that speaks for all who feel frustrated and voiceless due to the strains of polarization.

I'm voting for the moderate majority because IT SAYS WHO WE ARE, simply put.

I think it's inclusive, and it speaks more clearly than the other slogans to a 'majority' of people. To my mind, someone driving down the street sees that bumper sticker and says 'hey, I'm a moderate - perhaps I should see what this is all about.'

More than 'Stronger Together' (who are we talking about?), 'Giving America a Voice' (I've heard a lot of voices lately - most of them I wish would quiet themselves!), 'Taking Back America' (in aggreeance with smendler), 'Common Sense Politics' (a little dry and stale - and everyone thinks their politics are common sense).

My two cents...

i voted for this tag line as this is the real issue as to why i joined unity08. it is my opinion that we do need to get back to basics. our representatives have lost their way and forgotten their purpose: to enforce laws that have made our nation great.

anyone seeking citizenship has a clear path to do so. how can one who has chosen to flaunt these laws then say that they have become a law abiding citizen? many feel that it is their right to ignore our laws and borders. i hear many say it is simply 'migration'. it is well known that Mexico has very strict imigration laws regarding their borders yet we are called racists because of ours.

also, i would like to see the 'anchor babies' law repealed. to be an american citizen one parent should already be a citizen. i have seen documentaries where women cross the border to give birth so that their child will be a u.s. citizen. several of my grandchildren have been born in other countries but were not given automatic citizenship.

in any other part of the world if one is caught breaking their laws, harsh punishment is mandatory, yet again we are called racist.

as a citizen, i welcome anyone who wants to come to the usa legally. i think that they should bring some skill or talent and be willing to abide by our laws. i have relatives who have done so and are grateful to have become LEGAL citizens.

Dear "Lady"... your feelings are true but your approach is fascist? We are a ragtag army that includes these that speak broken english, peoples from many political views but all born in the Americas? How can such a harsh stance be adopted regarding this when it is all caused by the lack of positive identification? Can we not, by fingerprint technology, identify the bad from the good among us with upgraded social security cards that include positive identification for us all? Without spending a dime - all the criminals will be left in the cold and those Mexican Americans whom have committed no other crime than illegal immigration and working can then be granted amnesty. But only after upgraded identification cards and a double wall with a DMZ between these walls, no more slaves called migrant workers and no more ground transportation. If they want to visit let them fly in...- Earn Snyder

lol...first time that i have been called 'facist'. as stated in my post i am for immigration when it is done legally. i read you web page and saw the you are of the opinion that it a matter of migration rather than illegals crossing into our soveriegn nation.

the problem i see with accepting social security cards as a valid means of id to let "ordinary migrated workers" become legal american citizens is that they are easily forged. faudulent papers are too easily obtained to be relied upon as proof.

again i state, if you start by breaking one law, it is soon evident that other laws will need to be broken to perpetuate the first. i.e. faudulent papers etc.

the fingerprint id is one that i would support but the outcry and outrage over this would echo throughout the world as really being 'facist'.

i wonder why these masses of illegals do not fight for their own nation and try to cure their ills and poverty. it is well know that money sent to mexico from america is the second largest money maker for that government.

i do not know the best method to solve this problem but something should be done quickly as our social systems are failing due to 'free services' provided to illegals. many hospitals have had to close their doors and school are overburdened with them. our legal citizens are suffering because of magnitude of this situation. We all know that the services are not free and that they are paid for by the american tax payer.

We should be The Moderate Majority. We need to move forward, and not dwell on what is already said and done by either party. The Moderate Majority tells everyone what Unity'08 is about. "Taking Our Country Back" sounds too MoveOn.org-ish.

When I introduced the "Moderate Majority" tagline, I did not provide an explanation so perhaps now would be a good time.

In our society today, a very vocal and vitriolic minority dominates the two main political parties. In shrill tones, they defend themselves and demonize their opponents. They spend their time focusing on their differences and ignoring their similarities. The news media diligently supports this atmosphere simply because fistfights are more entertaining than tea parties. However, when we objectively look at our neighbors and ourselves we realize that this behavior is not a true reflection of our lives so why do our elected officials and their party leaders behave this way. Who represents the majority who is neither far right nor far left? Democrats and Republicans have a lot more in common than the behavior and rhetoric of their “leaders” would indicate. I hold the door for the person behind me regardless of their appearance and attitude and guess what, 99% of the time they say thank you.

I think we need to “take back” the debate and in so doing will take back our country. By declaring ourselves the “Moderate Majority” we make it clear to those who choose a life in politics (our leaders) that we will not stand for this mean spirited, back biting, kiss-up kick down behavior that currently dominates our political discourse. We pay them to govern our country not attack one another and it is time to hold them to the task. I heard someone say once and it rings very true, “Like it our not we all have two Senators and one Representative in Washington DC and the only thing they fear more than their large money contributors is an united and motivated electorate.” The majority of Americans are honest, hardworking and decent; it is time we put an end to this nonsense that seeks to turn us against each other.

One of the old Marxists, I think it was Lenin, said something like this and I paraphrase, “10 people shouting are louder than 10,000 people saying nothing”. I say, 10,000 people speaking calmly will easily drown out 10 people shouting. We are moderate and we are the majority. It is time for us to be heard.

I myself voted for the tagline, "Common Sense Politics"...but then, I got to thinking about it, and a totally new idea popped into my head:

"Unity08: Because enough is enough."

On another note: The other day, as I was coming out of the post office, there was a gentleman there outside the door- he had a table set up, with brochures, etc., and a sign that read something like, "BUSH NEEDS THERAPY-- SUPPORT LAROUCHE" (The part about Bush needing therapy is the only line I actually remember....) Anyhow, needless to say, he tried to get my attention as I walked out of the post office, but I paid him no mind-- as far as I'M concerned, it's not just Bush-- they ALL need therapy!!

It is very convenient that none of these taglines contains any content describing what precisely Unity08 stands for.

"Moderate," "Common Sense" and "Voice" don't count, because they don't have any agreed upon meanings.

It is almost as if this "grassroots movement" wants to avoid content.

Unity08: A New Party for a New Millenium

How about "The Mainstream Majority" I like the "Moderate majority", but it can also imply the "so so, medium, luke warm majority".

This says it for me.

Unity 08: The calm in the center of the storm

My word - let's not copy the 2 major parties internal dissent on this forum! We're trying to unify, not present addtional ideas on the the "tagline" topic. Pick one that's been suggested, and vote for it. If it needs to be changed later that can be accomplished, but for now let's stay focused on the topic at hand. Once this topic is solidified, we can move on to the next one.

I've been in the advertising business my entire career (26 years).

The tagline, particularly for a new brand (which is what Unity08 is), needs to be memorable, descriptive, provocative and ownable.

The only line that meets those criteria is The Moderate Majority. Its memorable (because of its twist on Falwell), its descriptive (it identifies exactly what we are and what we stand for), provocative (it will make people sit up and take notice) and ownable (no other party or candidate can own it and "Taking our country back" is one of the oldest political chestnuts in the book...historically used by both Democrats and Republicans seeking to "take back" the White House in virtually every presidential election since, well, presidential elections began- its a yawn!)

Here are a few ideas for taglines. Let me know how you like them. Feel free to use/alter/repeat these.

"In Unity We Can Change the World"
"United, There is Nothing We Can't Do"
"The Party of the People"
"Putting the American People back in Power"
"Giving the Republic back to the Public"
"A Party of the People, For the People, By the People"
"To Bring About a Better Future"
"The Public Reclaiming the Republic"
"Putting Non-Partisans in Power"
"Reclaiming Power for the People"
"Putting the Public Back Into Our Republic"
"It's Time the American People Chose their Leaders"
"Giving The American People a Real Choice"
"Restoring the Governed's Power Over the Government"
"Giving the American People a Voice"
"Power to the People"

It's time we stopped dreaming the "American Dream" and started living it!

Third parties are never invited. Let's crash the party!
