The reasons for high crime rates remain debatable but clearly include unemployment among the nation’s least educated, the media coverage/promotion of violent news and programming, and the use of the Internet by predators and criminal elements. Both the size and the treatment of the prison population are matters of great concern to many, as is the continued availability of illegal drugs.
